Dexter Water Polo Moves on to Regionals

The Dexter boys' water polo team moved on to this week's Regionals after a second-place finish at the Ann Arbor Huron district this weekend.

The Dreadnaughts took down Huron 13-5 in the semifinals Friday afternoon.

A pair of Sam Sterlitz goals put Dexter on top 2-0 in the first and Tristan Lorincz followed with a breakaway goal to make it 3-0 Dreads after one.

Sterlitz would score three straight goals to open the second to make it 6-0 Dexter.

Leo Varitek would score on a five-meter and Clayton Kinnard would score before Sterlitz netted his sixth of the game to make it 9-1 at the half.

The Dreadnuaghts would continue to pour it on in the third with Varitek, Sterlitz, and Kinnard scoring for a 12-1 lead after three.

Huron would find the net a couple of times late and Varitek scored his third of the game to make the final 13-5.

The championship game Friday night saw the Dreads meet up with Pioneer in another rematch.

Pioneer had handed Dexter its only loss of the season early in the campaign and the Pioneers came out quick with a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead.

Kinnard and Lorincz tallied goals for the Dreads to make it 2-2 after one.

The Pioneer defense clamped down on the Dreads in the second holding them scoreless and would add a pair of goals to make it 4-2 Pioneer at the half.

Varitek opened the scoring in the second half to cut the lead to 4-3, but Pioneer answered to make it 5-3 after three.

Pioneer scored to start the fourth to push the lead to 6-3, but Kinnard answered to make it 6-4.

Another Pioneer goal made it 7-4, but Sterlitz scored on a five-meter to make it 7-5.

Tony Golin kept the Dreads in it by making a save on a five-meter in net, but a few moments later Pioneer would tip home a rebound to make it 8-5.

Ben Duncan would score a late goal for Dexter to make the final 8-6.

Dexter will be a #2 seed at Regionals and will open with a match with Lake Orion with hopes of advancing to the state finals.
