Freedom Township is getting an emergency siren

With the help of Consumers Energy, Freedom Township is finally getting a much needed emergency siren.

Freedom Township, with its boundaries just two miles from the village of Manchester and five miles from the city of Chelsea, will see its own siren placed this September within earshot of many of residents.

After announcing this on April 16, Consumers Energy spokesman Brian Wheeler told The Sun Times News that Consumers is purchasing and installing an emergency siren on the grounds of the Freedom Compressor Station.

They made this announcement in a virtual meeting with community members.

“We decided to install the siren as part of our upgrades that are underway at the Freedom Station,” Wheeler said. “The decision came following conversations with local leaders and residents. From our understanding, Freedom Township is one of few communities in southeast Michigan currently without an emergency siren.”

The county will be able to activate the siren for weather and other emergencies, including anything at the compressor station, according to Wheeler. The county’s emergency manager will routinely test the emergency siren along with others in the county.

“The siren will be installed by a contractor and is expected to be operating by September,” Wheeler said. “Consumers Energy and the township will lead a communication and awareness campaign with residents regarding siren activation and testing.”
