The Chelsea girls’ tennis team won the SEC White title for the sixth consecutive year. Chelsea won 23 out of 24 matches in the in the contest. The only loss of the day was at one singles. Kelsie Weinreich played a great match but lost to Dexter’s Erin Evans 6-2, 6-3.

“Erin lost the SEC title the past two seasons after defeating our one singles in the regular season both times,” Coach Matt Pedlow said.  “Although I obviously was hoping Kelsie would win, Erin is a really nice player who deserved the victory.”

At two singles, Kyra Van Batavia solidly defeated Dexter 6-3, 6-1 after a tough loss a few weeks ago in the regular season. “I had to pull Kyra at the beginning of the third set that day as she was struggling with shoulder issues,” Pedlow said. “I’m glad she was able to play a full match today, she had some great shots and never gave her opponent a chance to set herself up to hit winners. Both girls played well and had some great shots, it was probably the best match of the day.”

The rest of the flights all played well and took first place.

In addition, the JV team finished the season undefeated again. Coach Tom Osbeck has done a great job building up one of the largest and most successful JV teams in the state.

“We had the JV girls play a few varsity matches this season and they won at every flight. Some of the girls didn’t lose a single set this season,” said Osbeck.  “I’m very proud of the level of play. Many of these girls are now starting in middle school. Coach Atkinson has done a great job building up a huge middle school team that has certainly had a lot of wins, so by the time they’re at the JV level they are ahead of their peers. Our Varsity also benefits greatly by having two assistant coaches along with Coach Osbeck and myself. Coach Misha Moore is the team mom, the girls love having Misha coach them, and she is the one they often turn to for advice and comfort after a tough loss. Coach Brian Tucker has also been a huge asset to have in our program. Tucker has been helping out over the past eight seasons and we’re very fortunate to have him. His level of knowledge is extensive, and he and Misha share a passion and enthusiasm that is infectious. Tom and I are very, very lucky to have both of these coaches in our program.”
