Despite a record-breaking heatwave, visitors to the Chelsea Sounds and Sights Thursday evening, June 20th, took time to stop and meet Hill Harper. Mr. Harper is running to fill Debbie Stabenow’s seat for the U.S. Senate. He reminded those gathered that voting in the primary is scheduled for August 6th, only eight weeks away. Harper will be running against U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin in the primary.
Many may recognize Mr. Harper as the actor who played Dr. Hawkes in CSI:NY or Dr. Andrews in The Good Doctor as well the best-selling author of Letters to a Young Brother. It is his lifelong passion for serving the community that draws him into the political realm at this juncture of his life.
With a degree in Economics from Brown University in 1988, Harper went on to graduate from the Harvard Law School, cum laude, in 1992 and later received an MPA (Master of Public Administration) from the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University. While at Harvard, Harper befriended Barack Obama who later appointed him to work with the National Institute of Health to report on cancer research and make recommendations for future policy. Mr. Harper is a cancer survivor and a single father as well as a small business owner and union leader.
He supports a strong economy, universal healthcare, reproductive rights, and lowering drug prices. Harper is dedicated to protecting children and our communities from gun violence. He has made tackling the climate crisis and protecting the Great Lakes along with shutting down Line 5 a key component of his platform. He is calling for a ceasefire in the Israel/Gaza conflict.
