The City of Chelsea is hiring a full time Water Assistant. Salary range is $28.05 – $31.85/hour. Application deadline is November 1, 2024
Background:
Function
Operate and maintain the water wells, water treatment plant, and distribution system
Key Responsibilities and Duties
– Review, record, and change recording charts for the various chambers and tanks so
as to control and maintain efficient plant operation
– Operate chlorinators, conveyors, metering instrumentation, pumps, motors, auxiliary
power equipment, control stations, filters and other plant equipment
– Load and control the mixing of fluoride and other chemicals and/or agents into the
treatment process
– Clean and lubricate all pumps, valves and meters and carry out the preventive plant
maintenance schedule including iron removal filter backwashing, and report the need
for emergency or major equipment repairs
– Participate in the installation, building, repair and winterization of equipment and
facilities, perform other minor duties such as painting, plumbing and mechanical
repairs
– Participate in maintenance of the buildings, grounds and properties under the control
of the water department
– Participate in the repair of sidewalks, streets and driveways to support water main
breaks
– Drain backwash water lagoons and winterize lagoon, drain and wells
– Operate air compressor, boring and excavating equipment, tapping machine, trucks
and other equipment as required
– Participate in the installation and repair of water services, water mains, hydrants, and
valves including grounds clean-up work
– Record new or changed valve, hydrant and water main installations and update
location manuals and maps
– Participant in regular hydrant flushing and valve exercising program
– Change, repair, and maintain water meters and carry out the water meter preventive
maintenance schedule
– Read routine water meters and final reads as requested by the billing office
– Locate and mark water mains and service connections upon request
Job Description
Water Assistant
– Respond to customer water on and off requests as scheduled
– Perform laboratory work including taking water samples at required frequency and
locations in the system; delivering the samples to designated locations for study
and/or analysis; cleaning, calibrating, maintaining and storing laboratory equipment
and supplies and making up reagents and other testing compounds
– Perform other duties as assigned to support the Public Utilities Service Division
Necessary Qualifications
A qualified candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications and background.
– Holds a high school diploma or higher
– Has a minimum of one-year of experience in the field of water treatment or
distribution
– Holds a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Group B designation or higher) and a
good driving record
– Demonstrates an ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
– Holds a minimum S-4 and D-4 water operator certifications from the State of
Michigan, and the ability to obtain an S-3 and D-3 certification within two (2) years of
hire date.
– Skill in operating various types of heavy construction and power-driven equipment is
desired
– Demonstrates an ability to effectively communicate with residents, business owners
and customers
– Demonstrates knowledge of the materials, methods, equipment and safety
procedures used in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants and
distribution systems
