June Marie Vail Winans

Mrs. June Marie Vail Winans passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Hurricane, Utah, at the age of 89. Her passing was eased by the nurturing care of the staff at Beehive Homes of Hurricane, Utah, where she resided for her final two years of life.
June was born in Chelsea, Michigan on June 21, 1928, the first of two children born to Alvin Willis Vail and Annette Louise Eisemann. She graduated as valedictorian of her Chelsea High School Class of 1946. She went on to obtain both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University, with summa cum laude honors. She completed a successful career as a public-school teacher at Chelsea High School.
June was married to Charles Burkhart Winans in Chelsea, Michigan on June 21, 1947. He passed away on May 23, 2003. The couple had two children; a son, Charles Burkhart Winans II, and a daughter, Gayle Adrianne Winans.

June was a life-long member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea, Michigan.
June loved being a teacher and associating with students and fellow faculty. She continued to work as a substitute teacher for several years following her official retirement. She also worked as a volunteer at Chelsea Community Hospital after retiring. She was passionate about tennis, both playing and watching. She was an avid reader for her entire life. She also enjoyed traveling.  But most of all, she loved her family.
June is survived by her son Charles, daughter-in-law Wilma Jane, and daughter Gayle; seven grandchildren: Adam (Sarah) Winans, Carter (Christian) Perras, Courtney (Jody) Drewry, Colby (Don) Fletcher, Tyler (Lisa) Gorton, Trevor (Shayna) Gorton, and Casey (Dale) Mills; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Helen Jean Vail Kensler.
A memorial is planned for Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 2pm in the Cafeteria at the Washington Street Education Center, 500 E. Washington Street, Chelsea, MI. (Old Chelsea High School Senior Citizen Area). A private family interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, MI.
