The Dexter Dreadnaughts Girls Basketball team avenged a 42-35 Jan. 19 loss to the Chelsea Bulldogs last night, winning 34-32 in overtime.

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Lady Bulldogs used an 11-2 run at the start of the game and a 14-5 run in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Last night, the Lady Dreads changed up their defensive strategy to defeat the undefeated (9-1) number one ranked team in the SEC White.

“Basically what we told the girls was ‘Look if we want to win we have to try and turn the game into an ugly, just scrap, battle, and fight type of game,’” said Dexter head coach Mike Bavineau. “I thought our kids were able to do it and maybe caught them off guard a bit. They have a really good team I just thought our team fought really hard tonight, made some baskets when we had to and that was the difference in the game.”

Another change in the Lady Dread’s strategy was switching defensive assignments on Chelsea junior forward Abigail Fullerton.

“We told Kylee (Niswonger), who we had on her tonight, look you can’t leave her,” said Bavineau. “If she goes to get a drink, you go with her. Wherever she goes you go. And she did a pretty good job of it, Fullerton got free a few times but that’s just gonna happen. We felt like that was a better matchup for us, then it allowed us to have Sammi (Corcoran) apply ball pressure. We thought that was a good switch for us and a good matchup.”

In their first meeting, Fullerton led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points. Yesterday night she was held to 7 points by Lady Dreads freshman guard Kylee Niswonger.

The Lady Bulldogs came back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Lady Dreads 9-6, taking the lead 27-26 with 2:25 remaining off of a Fullerton drive and finish with the left hand.

Dexter sophomore forward Kylie Cabana drew a foul in the paint on the ensuing trip down the court and went 1-2 to tie it at 27.

With 8.8 seconds remaining the Bulldogs had a chance to win it, an out of bounds play that had Chelsea senior forward Anna Regis find Fullerton on a backdoor cut with a bounce pass.

Fullerton was fouled with 3.4 seconds remaining with the Lady Bulldogs in the bonus. She missed the free throw and the game headed to overtime tied at 27.

Dexter senior guard Sammi Corcoran and Cabana combined for the winning possession in overtime but not before a clutch play by Cabana to give the Lady Dreads the opportunity. She saved an offensive rebound on the baseline that was headed out of bounds, leading to a Dreadnaught timeout with 15.7 seconds left.

With 4.2 seconds remaining she was on the receiving end of a Corcoran drive and dish right in the middle of the paint for a layup. Fullerton got the ball around mid-court but the shot fell short as the Lady Dreadnaughts rushed the court.

Corcoran led the Lady Dreads with 14 points with 12 of them coming from behind the arc, Niswonger added 6 points and senior guard Nicole Tuzinowski had 4 points.

Junior center Madeleine Vasquez led the Lady Bulldogs with 9 points, Fullerton had 7 points.

The win handed Chelsea (9-1) their first conference loss and moved Dexter (7-3) to third place in the SEC White.
