A back and forth match came down to the final seconds as the Dexter boys’ lacrosse team pulled out a last-second 11-10 win over Ann Arbor Greenhills Saturday, April 7.
Greenhills tied the game at 10 with 33 seconds left and gained control of the ball after the goal. Dexter defenseman Marcus Young stole a long pass and hit Gabe Walrdup with a pass upfield. Waldrup made a move on a Greenhills defender and cut in on the net and beat the goaltender for the game-winning goal with 14 seconds left.
One last attempt by Greenhills at the buzzer was stopped by Dexter goaltender Cooper Howatt as the Dreads escaped with the win to improve to 2-1 overall on the season.
Goals by Ryan Lotz, Grisha Griffiths, and Sean Carr gave the Dreads a 5-2 lead after one period.
Greenhills battled back, but an Evan Chappell goal and Lotz made a steal and scored in front of the net to give Dexter a 7-6 lead at the half.
Two quick goals to start the third gave Greenhills an 8-7 lead, but a big moment in the game came when they were called for a two-minute checking major.
Dexter capitalized on the penalty and goals by Jasper Howell and Waldrup gave them a 9-8 lead after three.
Another Greenhills goal tied the game at nine, but Cam Palmer scored to give the Dreads the lead again at 10-9 setting up the exciting finish.
