A well-played up and down the field girls soccer game was decided in the final minutes Thursday as the Saline Hornets pulled out an exciting 1-0 win over Pinckney on a goal by Genesis Pena with 1:43 left in the game.

Both teams had several good scoring chances in the second half with the Hornets Annika Udrys and the Pirates Cameryn Sage both coming up with big saves at each end.

While the Hornets controlled most of the play in the first half, the Pirates defense held tough. Saline had a couple of good scoring chances with Sage making a diving save on one and the other shot being lofted over the top of the net.

The Pirates offense picked up the pace in the second half and the Hornets did not back down as the action went back and forth with both teams getting quality scoring chances.

With under two minutes remaining, a pass down low toward the goal line was passed back out to Pena who knocked a shot from about 25 yards out, Sage had no chance at a save as the ball found the top left corner of the net for the game-winner with 1:43 left.

Earlier in the week the Hornets downed Ann Arbor Huron 2-0.

Tate Robison and Nora Udrys scored first-half goals for the Hornets and that is all they would need for the win. Sophie Wood and Lauren Rubin picked up assists, while Annika Udrys picked up the win in net.

The Hornets pulled out another 1-0 win over Northville Friday night.

Annika Dahlman scored the game’s only goal in the first half with an assist to Bella Petrock.
