New And Improved Award In Our Future

On behalf of the Chelsea High School Student Council, I would like to bring up a topic that has recently influenced the tradition of our school. In the past at Chelsea High, a homecoming queen and court of princesses were elected each fall. This was originally created to celebrate all the wonderful things those girls had to offer. However, since then, this award has been abused on many different levels. Not only has it pit the girls who were nominated against each other, it has also been used in various forms of bullying. There have been a number of girls who have been nominated as jokes by the people in their class, which is completely unacceptable.

As a student council we realize that this is an outdated and derogatory award, and so as of this 2018-19 school year, we have changed this award for the better.
We’ve changed the Homecoming Queen Award into the Chelsea Excellence Award. This award is directed towards the positive attributes and the true nature of the individuals who are nominated and elected.

This award will highlight the good qualities a person contributes towards the school and the community. The Chelsea Excellence Award will also eliminate the possibility of joke nominations- it’s much harder to insult someone when you’re saying they’re a pillar of the community. This step forward in our school will end the hostile environment the Homecoming Award has created in the past. It’s something a winner would be proud to accept and will be able to be listed as an award on college resumes.

As a council we look forward to seeing this age-old tradition come to an end, and we are ecstatic to have a new and improved award in our future.                                                                                                                                                 Maddie Dunlap
