On Dec. 27 the Manchester Flying Dutchmen Wrestling team hosted a team invitational at Manchester High School with Belleville, Homer, Ida, Jackson, Adrian Madison, Napoleon, Pinckney, Trenton, and Woodhaven scheduled to attend.
The Dutchmen went 4-1 on the day, falling to Woodhaven in the final, 51-16, with a few matches going all three periods before the Warriors from Woodhaven won the decision.
“I saw a lot of good things too,” said Manchester head coach Steve Vlcek on the loss against a Warriors team he expects to make team states. “Saw some kids, Grant and the Bunn twins, even though they’re losing, they’re trying to score late in the match. That’s what its gonna take.”
The Dutchmen defeated Ida (56-21), Adrian Madison (68-3), and Erie Mason (81-0) earlier in the day to take first place in their pool. They defeated Napoleon (63-15) to set up the final match with the Warriors.
Jacob Shelby (130) led the Dutchmen going undefeated at 5-0. Jake Bunn (112), Drew Gehardt, (119), Phoenix Waters (125), Grant Tungate (135), Jacob Kurgin (145), Colin McCaffrey (171), Travis Withrow (215), and Simon L:ato (Heavyweight) all went 4-1 on the day.
“Overall a good day,” said Vlcek. “Got some good matches in have to get ready for Saturday.”
On Dec. 29 the Dutchmen traveled to Lawton for another team invitational.
