Editor’s note: In its May 15, 2024, edition, the Sun Times News included a special “Discover Tecumseh” section. It contains articles describing many of the businesses and community life in this charming town. We’re running the articles online and encourage you to add a trip to Tecumseh to your list of fun things to do this summer.

Martin’s Home Center, a cornerstone of Tecumseh’s retail landscape, has served the community since its establishment in 1947. Originally a Gamble’s hardware store, it transitioned to an Ace Hardware in the late 70s, retaining its core ethos while expanding its offerings to include furniture, appliances, and electronics. The driving evolution is the store’s commitment to adapting and growing with its clientele while maintaining a sense of tradition.

Derek Martin, the fourth generation to work in the business, recently returned to the family business after gaining experience elsewhere. “I spent about five years out with Target, learning more and growing more on the business side of things,” Derek explained. He values the unique benefits of running a family-operated venture, emphasizing the contrast between corporate structures and the personal touch a family business can offer. “There’s a lot of great things with corporate structure, but there’s a lot that you don’t get in terms of values and connection,” he added.

The family’s involvement in the business is deep-rooted and multifaceted. Derek’s father oversees operations, while his aunt manages hardware, ordering, and payroll. He noted family’s foundational role in the business’s operations: “A lot of our core foundation and what makes this work is because we have family in here that puts in the hours that make it successful.”

Derek’s return to Tecumseh and his reintegration into the family business exemplify the strong familial ties that characterize Martin’s Home Center. “I always knew, and my goal was [to be] back by 30,” he said, underlining his long-standing intention to return and contribute to the business’s legacy and community presence.
