Chelsea’s Nick Matusko came up just short for his bid in a state championship, falling 5-2 to
Matusko entered the finals with an undefeated record at 46-0 and ranked 4th, while Mutschler was 36-2 and ranked #1 in the state.
Mutschler got a takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but Matusko escaped to make it 2-1 after one period.
An escape by Mutschler in the second made it 3-1 after two periods.
Trailing 3-1 in the third, Matusko chose bottom and nearly locked in a headlock for a reversal but Mutschler slipped out of it to keep it 3-1. Matusko got the escape with 36 seconds in the match to make it 3-2 and needed a takedown for the win. He went on the attack, but Mutschler got a takedown with nine seconds left to make it 5-2 and seal the win.
Matusko reached the finals with a 16-1 tech fall and a pair of hard-fought 3-1 and 3-2 wins over ranked opponents. He finished the season with a 46-1 record.
Two other Bulldogs participated in the finals.
Josiah Fitch came up just short in his bid to reach the podium. He dropped his first match but bounced back with a 4-3 win. He needed a win in his next match to earn all-state honors but fell by pin to fall short. He finished the season with a 39-12 record.
Shane Nold qualified for the finals for the first time. He dropped both his matches and finished the season with a 32-14 record.
Three other area wrestler took part in the finals.
Dexter’s Mark Young dropped both his matches at D2 215 and finished the season with a 44-7 record.
Saline had a pair of wrestlers at the finals.
Cade Gilles dropped both his matches at D1 171 and finished with a 32-13 record.
Zach Sabin dropped both matches at D1 215 and finished with a 35-12 record.
