Matusko, Shelby Wrestling for State Titles Saturday

Two area wrestlers have a chance to claim state titles Saturday after picking up three wins Friday and moving on to the state championship match tomorrow afternoon.

Chelsea junior Nick Matusko and Manchester junior Jacob Shelby will be wrestling for their first state titles Saturday.

Matusko (46-0) opened with a 16-1 tech fall in his first-round match and then ground out a tough 3-1 decision against the 2nd ranked wrestler from Sparta in the quarterfinals. He then won 3-2 in the semifinals to set up the state title bout. Matusko will face top-ranked Avry Mutschler (36-2) of Lowell for the D2 140 championship. Chelsea’s Corbyn Munson defeated Mutschler in the 2018 state finals to claim the state title.

Shelby (48-5) earned All-State honors in 2018 with an 8th place finish at D4 119. He opened with an 11-2 major decision in his opening match a then won 5-1 in the quarterfinals. In his semifinal match, it was scoreless after two periods, but Shelby got an escape and a takedown for a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 win to advance to the finals. He will take on number one ranked Jamison Ward (52-1) of Carson City-Crystal.

Six other Manchester wrestlers will have spots on the podium for All State Honors Saturday. Simon Lato (285), Jared Bunn (103), Jacob Bunn (103), Drew Gebhardt (119), Grant Tungate (135), and Jacob Kurgin (145) will be wrestling Saturday for a chance to finish from anywhere from third to eighth place in the state.
