Passed away at age 92, Friday, June 15, 2018 in Chelsea, MI. He was born in Floyd County, Kentucky, up Oklahoma Holler, on November 21, 1925 the son of Floyd and Virgie (Jarrell) Stephens.
In 1953, he left Kentucky and moved to the Chelsea area where he has resided ever since. Melvin had worked as a Machine Operator for NSK and Hoover, and he was a member of the UAW.
He enjoyed hunting, whether it was turkey, deer, squirrel, rabbits or coons. He enjoyed tending his garden, and he was a life member of the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club and a very passionate Detroit Tigers fan.
April 20, 1950, he married Billie Mae Bentley, and she preceded him in death on September 4, 2012.
He is survived by three children: Gregory (Gail) Stephens of Pleasant Lake, Gary Stephens of Jackson, and Sheri Spears of Chelsea; three grandchildren Jeremy (Sharon) Stephens, Shane Stephens, and Justin (Ashley Karn) Stephens; four great-grandchildren, Zach Turner, Megan Turner, Hope Stephens, and Scott Stephens; one brother-in-law, Thurman Bentley, a sister-in-law Irene Stephens and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded by his ten siblings: brothers Marcy, Burns, Clarence, Harry, Luther, Ernest, and John Stephens, and sisters Hazel, Elma Mulkey, and Ruth Mulkey; also his son-in-law Michael Spears.
Funeral Services took place from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home on Tuesday June 19, 2018 with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove East Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday, June 18, 2018.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club or the Chelsea Area Faith in Action.
