Mother Nature Not Cooperating With Spring Sports

The calendar may say April and it is spring time, Mother Nature is saying something different with extremely cold and wet conditions over the past two weeks forcing area schools and athletic departments to cancel numerous sporting events.

Most area schools have scheduled later games due to Washtenaw County having an early spring break and one would have thought that would have helped with the weather, but it has not as winter hangs on.

Warmer weather is in the forecast for this week and area team are hoping to see their first action of the season very soon.

Chelsea girls’ soccer had two games postponed last week due to cold and snowy conditions, while the baseball team had a doubleheader canceled.

Teams had games that were scheduled for earlier this week pushed back to later in the week with the “warmer” weather in the forecast.

Dexter baseball and softball teams had games canceled for Saturday due to the cold.

Manchester and Saline sports also had most of their contests postponed or canceled for the week.

The early season cancellations have athletic directors and their secretaries scrambling to find reschedule dates or just canceling the early season contests altogether. Along with the bad weather, rescheduling becomes an issue due to the MHSAA currently struggling with low numbers in officiating.
