If you were fortunate enough to be at Brewed Awakenings Café on Wednesday, May 8, you were in a for a treat. Saline Area Senior Center (SASC) members of musical and writing groups provided a full hour of free, enjoyable entertainment.
The Open Mic event featured various talents and creative styles of readings and music; the audience laughed and chuckled to poetry and stories, and sang along to the likes of familiar tunes of Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, and the Beatles. To be sure, octogenarian Mick Jagger’s got nothing on these seniors.
Megan Kenyon, program coordinator at the SASC, commented on the event: “This is our first of, I hope, many Open Mic Nights with Brewed Awakenings. I am so proud of those who came forward to perform and hope they inspire other SASC members to join our next one. A huge thank you to Kim Kaster at Brewed for hosting us. She is a big supporter of SASC; we’re so grateful for what she does in the community.
Also, a big thank you to everyone who came out tonight to show their support. There’s a lot of research out there showing how participating in the creative arts is just as important for older adults as it is for children. Whether it be painting, music, writing, photography, or crafting, we encourage people to try out something creative at SASC. Our groups are led by members and are very welcoming!”
