The Chelsea Area Festivals and Events (CAFE) will continue to hold the social tent in Parking Lot 1 in downtown Chelsea for the Sounds and Sights festival that takes place every summer.
The special event permit was approved by the Chelsea City Council on Feb. 19 at a regular meeting, contingent on the submission of an updated insurance certificate.
The tent will be up for the duration of the Sounds and Sights festival, which supports the Sounds and Sights Thursday night concert series that takes place throughout the summer and has a beer and wine service area along with a concert stage.
According to information provided by CAFE, last year there were 2,683 social tent attendees with the tent generating 50% of the funds needed to pay performers for Thursday nights. With over 135 paid acts last year CAFE will be holding auditions in early March with the festival taking
place Jul. 25 to 27.
At the last council meeting, CAFE had made the request to use Palmer Commons as another potential stage for their concert series. City Manager John Hanifan noted that this request was different from CAFE’s prior request regarding Palmer Commons usage and that CAFE has currently withdrawn that proposal.
Hanifan reported to council that CAFE would come back at a later date in regard to any requested use for Palmer Commons.
