Editor’s note: In its May 15, 2024, edition, the Sun Times News included a special “Discover Tecumseh” section. It contains articles describing many of the businesses and community life in this charming town. We’re running the articles online and encourage you to add a trip to Tecumseh to your list of fun things to do this summer.
Michelle Crandall, the owner of Pets in Focus, established the pet photography business in 2019 after leaving a 17-year nursing career. Merging her love for animals and photography, she quickly transitioned from the medical field into capturing endearing portraits of pets. “I always loved photography and always loved animals, and I thought, ‘What an excellent way to create a career for myself to merge them together,’” Crandall explained.
Initially, Crandall focused on photographing dog sports, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to pivot when her scheduled events were canceled. She shifted gears and started specializing in dog portraits, a change she embraced wholeheartedly. “That’s when I kind of restarted my whole business in 2021 on that basis, and I’ve been doing pet portraits ever since, and I absolutely love it,” she said.
Crandall emphasizes comfort and safety when working with pets, tailoring her approach to each animal’s personality and ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved. “My number one goal is safety—nobody’s getting hurt getting their dog’s picture taken. And number two, very close second, is to make sure that they’re comfortable,” she noted. Her dedication and gentle techniques often result in even the most timid pets warming up to her.
Operating primarily in the Tecumseh region, she continues to grow her client base while expanding her reach into surrounding areas, such as Toledo and Chelsea, through events with local humane societies and pet-related organizations.
