5/2 ~1:37 pm, an officer responded to Mill Pond Park on West Russell Street for a malicious destruction of property at the pavilion. At the scene, the officer observed torn and damaged roof shingles lying on the ground near the pavilion building. The officer further saw a large, green trash container on the roof and several picnic tables that were overturned. The officer took digital photographs of the scene and completed a city property loss form. At the time of the report, there were not any known suspects or witnesses. The officer took no further action, and the case was closed for lack of evidence to further investigate.
~7:28am, an officer was dispatched to the CVS on East Michigan Avenue for the retail fraud of liquor that happened earlier in the morning. At the scene, the officer met with the CVS manager who reported a suspect entered the store a little before 1am and stole one bottle of Jack Daniels ($49.96) and one bottle of Jose Cuervo ($34.99). A witness, a 19-year-old Saline woman, recognized the suspect from school and provided his name to the manager. The suspect was identified as a 19-year-old Willis man. The manager played the officer the surveillance video of the incident, which clearly showed the suspect getting the liquor in a hand basket, leaving the store without paying and setting off the door alarm, the police report states. No suspect interview was sought due to the positive identification of the Willis man. The case was turned over to the city attorney for charges.
