The Saline baseball team opened SEC Red play with a three-game sweep of rival Bedford last week.
The Hornets opened the week taking down the Mules 8-2 behind the pitching of Cole Daniels.
Daniels struck out 14 and allowed just four hits in the complete-game win.
The Hornets scored all the runs they would need in the second when Jack O’Keefe singled in a pair of runs and Vinnie Patteri doubled him home for a 3-0 lead.
That would be all Daniels would need as he shut down Bedford until the fifth when the Hornets built an 8-0 lead.
Ethan Collick led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while Daniels helped his cause with three hits and two runs scored. O’Keefe finished with two hits and two RBI and Patteri a hit and RBI.
The Hornets then took a pair from Bedford Thursday, winning 8-0 and 5-3 to complete the three-game sweep.
Lance Blaszak and Ryan Steinhauer stymied the Mules and combined to toss a one-hitter and striking out four.
Saline took a 1-0 lead in the third when Noah Nelson squeeze bunted, scoring Patteri the early lead.
The Hornets pulled off another squeeze bunt in the fifth, this time it was Patteri with the bunt that scored Brad Baldus for a 2-0 lead. Nelson then singled to drive in Jacob Ohren-Hoeft to make it 3-0 and that is all they would need. The Hornets added five insurance runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Nelson finished with two hits and four RBI to lead the offense. Alex Morrison had three hits and scored a run, while Patteri had two hits and two RBI and Paul Kiyabu two hits and an RBI. Blaszak earned the win with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Hornets took an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap and held off the Mules for the 5-3 win.
Nelson led the offense with a pair of hits, while Ohren-Hoeft, Morrison, and Logan Evans each had a hit and RBI. Evans also picked up the win on the mound, striking out six in four innings of relief work.
The Hornets took on Northville in a doubleheader that was a rematch of last year’s Division 1 state championship game and both games were barnburners as Northville took the opener 3-2 and the Hornets the second game 9-8.
Northville took a 2-0 lead in the third, but the Hornets tied it in the fourth on a two-run homer by Evans. It stayed that way until the seventh when Northville pushed one across for a 3-2 lead.
Saline loaded the bases in the seventh with a double, a hit batter, and a walk but could not tie the game.
The Hornets took an early 4-0 lead in the second game only to have Northville bounce back to take a 7-6 lead in the fifth.
Morrison led off the sixth with a home run to tie the game and Collick doubled home a pair of runs for a 9-7 lead.
Northville pushed a run across in the seventh to make it 9-8 and had the tying run at third, but O’Keefe got a pop out to second to end the game.
Collick finished with three hits and two RBI, while Daniels had a hit and three RBI. Ohren-Hoeft had three hits and scored a run.
O’Keefe earned the win on the mound with two innings of relief work.
