The Saline boys’ basketball team saw its season come to an end in the Class A district finals, falling to Belleville 57-49 Friday night.
The Hornets held tough until the fourth quarter when Belleville went on a 9-4 run to take an 11 point lead and cruised to the win.
Saline looked strong early, taking a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
Belleville opened the second with an 8-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. The Hornets closed the half on a 7-2 run to trail just 29-25 at intermission.
Griffin Yaklich powered the Hornets with 11 first half points.
Belleville looked to be taking control in the third, but the Hornets held tough and trailed 41-35, but the Tigers went on a 9-4 run to take a 50-39 lead.
The Hornets tried to fight back one more time, but it was not meant to be.
Yaklich and Connor Terech led Saline with 13 points, while Trevor Arico added 11.
The Hornets reached the finals with a pair of wins earlier in the week.
Saline opened with a 60-48 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln Monday night.
Arico finished with a career high of 29 points to lead the Hornets. Yaklich added 16 points, three rebounds, five assists. Turner had 10 points, seven rebounds, and an assist. Heisler finished with three points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
The Hornets used a big second quarter to pull away from Monroe and rolled to a 57-40 win. Saline outscored Monroe 19-8 in the second to blow open a close game and take a 30-16 lead and never looked back.
Yaklich led Saline with 18 points, while Arico added 12.
Saline finished with a 13-10 overall record.
