The Saline boys water polo team overpowered Walled Lake Western 13-3 in a showdown at Saline High School Sept. 7.
The squad put offensive pressure immediately on their opponent, scoring early and often in the first half. The Hornets boasted two goals in the opening quarter to take the 2-0 lead, then rallied for five more scores in the second quarter to mount the commanding 7-1 advantage at halftime.
The only Walled Lake goal before the break came on a penalty shot midway through the second quarter.
Anchored by strong defense the entire contest, which transitioned into scoring opportunities on the other end, Saline finished off Walled Lake with six more scores in the second half. Junior Cole Pelton led the way with five goals in the match, while senior Matt Rock boasted four more in the lopsided win.
The stifling Hornet defense was led by senior goalkeeper Ethan Lovett, who notched eight saves, and seniors Danny Godell and Andrew Brown both totaled five steals against Walled Lake. Sophomore Colin Nouhan (two goals), Brown and senior Hunter Nelson also scored in the victory.
