A hockey battle between two state ranked teams was just that as Saline defeated Chelsea 2-1 in overtime Saturday, January 20.
The Hornets entered the contest with a 13-1 record and ranked 6th in Division 2, while the Bulldogs came in 10-2-1 and ranked 10th in Division 3.
It was a battle from the start as the teams were scoreless after one.
The Bulldogs went on the powerplay in the second, but Saline broke in two on one and Mason Ausmus hit Ben Wild with a pass and he found the net to make it 1-0 Saline.
It would stay that was until late in the third period.
Chelsea was called for a penalty with 36 seconds left in the game and it looked like Saline would take home the win, but Brennan Wright hit Nicklas Holmberg with a pass and he wristed a shot into the top corner of the net for a shorthanded goal with 13 seconds left in the game to send it into overtime.
Saline still had 1:24 left of the penalty and wasted no time as Brendan Murphy took a pass by the blue line and made on mover around a sliding Chelsea player and wristed a shot into the net for the game winner just 20 seconds into the overtime period.
The Hornets improved to 14-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fell to 10-3-1.
