The Saline girls’ soccer team avenged its state semifinal loss Saturday by taking down the defending Division 1 state champion Rochester Hills Stoney Creek 2-0.
The Hornets returned to the field that saw their season end one game short of the state championship when Stoney Creek got to play the state semifinal game at home, but this time it was the Hornets that carried all the play.
Saline had a great chance midway through the first half when a shot rang off the crossbar and bound out. The rebound landed in front, but the shot went wide to keep the game scoreless.
The Hornets broke through a few minutes later when MaKena Means took a pass that led her past the defense, and she beat the keeper for a 1-0 first half lead.
The smothering Saline defense kept Stoney Creek on its heals all day and it remained 1-0 until the second half.
The Hornets knocked the ball past the endline and Stoney Creek had a goal kick. The pass went to a side defender who tried to make a pass up the middle and Cora Conley stepped in front of the pass for a steal. She controlled the ball to her left and fired a left footed shot into the back right corner for a 2-0 lead and that is all Saline would need to improve to 11-1-1 on the season.
