In what was a preview of the Division 1 opening round district game in two weeks, the Saline volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Ann Arbor Skyline 3-2.
The game was a battle throughout, with every set a fight to the end.
Saline took the opening set in a marathon 31-29 and the second was just as close as the Hornets won 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead.
Despite the 2-0 deficit, Skyline still had a fire lit with both sets being close and they began to battle back, taking the third 21-25. The Eagles continued their comeback by taking the fourth set in another close one 25-23 to tie the match at 2-2.
Like the first three sets, the deciding fifth set was a barn burner. Skyline built a 13-10 lead forcing a Saline timeout. The Hornets battled back but dropped the heartbreaking final set 15-12.
Brianna Woods had 20 kills and one block to lead the Hornets.
Olivia Vance had a big game at the net with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Julia Blaney had 11 kills and four assists.
Kaija Sydlowski added 10 kills and Kathryn Wilkie five. Julianna Pena led the offense with 41 assists and two aces, while Ellie Munn had 18 assists and 11 digs. Mickaley Monahan had 22 digs, Haley Blaney 11 digs, and Haley Turner two blocks.
The Hornets will host Adrian in the regular season finale Tuesday, October 23.
