Sandra Sue Darrow, affectionately known as “Mema,” was born on March 1, 1944, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She peacefully departed this life on May 13, 2024, in Dexter, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family. Sandra was a long-time resident of Dexter.
Sandra was the beloved daughter of Art Selent and Wilma Sweet. On September 2, 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, James H. Darrow, with whom she shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.
Throughout her life, Sandra made an impact on everyone around her. She had a way of making people feel welcome, transitioning seamlessly between moments of sweetness and sassiness. She loved to have a good time and embraced life fully. Kind-hearted yet assertive, Mema was always at the forefront of activities, not just observing but leading the fun.
In her adult years, Sandra worked at various places, including Dexter IGA, Busch’s, Renkin Associates, and Farmer Grants. However, her favorite job was working as a caregiver for children & grandchildren.
A passionate gardener, Sandra found joy and solace amidst the blossoms and greenery of her garden. Pink was her favorite color, mirroring her radiant and warm personality. She also enjoyed Michigan football, shopping, and tending to her beautiful flower gardens.
Above all, Sandra cherished her roles as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. Her love for her family was boundless, and she will forever hold a place in our hearts as our beloved Mema.
Sandra was renowned for her vibrant spirit and zest for life. She approached every occasion with boundless enthusiasm, often going above and beyond to make birthdays and holidays unforgettable for her loved ones. As the “fun mom” of the neighborhood, she welcomed children with open arms, creating cherished memories for all who crossed her threshold.
Sandra is survived by her loving husband James “Jim” H. Darrow her son Richard “Rick” A. Darrow, her daughter Rebecca K. Gray (Steven) and her brother Doug Dunham, her grandson Justin S. Gray her granddaughter Alyssa M. Darrow her great grandchildren Mekai and Kailanna and her niece Sandy Sue Boukai.
Sandra was preceded in death by her father, Arthur E. Selent and her mother Wilma sweet. Her beloved son, Robert “Rob” J. Darrow Her niece Cyndi L. Burm Ruddis her brother Chuck Dunham and sister Janet Burm.
A visitation for Sandra will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 3410 Broad St, Dexter, Michigan 48130 followed by a funeral service from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the same location. A committal service will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8095 Grand Street, Dexter, Michigan 48130.
Following the services, a time of luncheon and fellowship will be held at Dexter American Legion Post 557: Outdoor Pavilion, 8225 Dexter-Chelsea Road, Dexter, Michigan 48130 providing an opportunity for loved ones to share memories and support one another.
The family kindly requests that donations be made to Mott Children’s Hospital, a cause dear to Sandra’s heart. Contributions in her honor will continue her legacy of caring and compassion, providing support to children and families in need during challenging times.
