In addition to looking for a new fire chief, Scio Township is also looking to replace the soon-to-retire township manager Bryce Kelley.
With Kelley calling it a day at the end of December, the township is shifting its hiring process into a higher gear in the coming weeks. A list of finalists has been formed and will soon be unveiled.
On Nov. 19, the Scio Township Board held a special meeting with its consultant Matt Lane about the next steps as it picked a list of candidates.
According to Scio Township Clerk Jessica Flintoft and Supervisor Jack Knowles, the township has hired Lane to conduct the search and receive all applications.
“He then narrowed applicants to finalist candidates about which he presented summaries without names to the board at our special meeting Tuesday 11/19,” Flintoft said by email.
She said, “Four candidates were considered in Open Session, and eight candidates were considered in Closed Session because those candidates had requested confidentiality pursuant to Section 8(f) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act, MCL 15.268. The Board approved Matt inviting five candidates for interviews with the Board, at which point the Board will receive identifying information about the candidates.”
“We reviewed the qualifications and employment information from the best 12 candidates as determined by our search consultant,” Knowles said in follow-up with The Sun Times News. “We short listed that group to 5 finalists for interviews.”
In looking forward, Flintoft said the township is currently planning:
Tuesday, December 10: Special Board Meeting for Interviews 9 a.m. – Noon/Board Room.
Wednesday, December 11: Special Board Meeting for Interviews 9 a.m. to 2 p.m./Board Room.
Wednesday, December 10: Public Meet & Greet 4 to 6 p.m./Board Room.
Thursday, December 12: Special Board Meeting for Discussion and Possible Action — 9 a.m. / Board Room.
A description of the opening was posted on the website, LinkedIn, a social media site used by job hunters and recruiters. The post said in part: Township Manager (Client Opening) under the Company Name: M.S. Lane Consulting LLC Company Location for Scio Township.
