Season Preview: Chelsea Girls Basketball

Disclaimer* –  Due to a miscommunication,  previews will be coming out over the next day or two. We are aware some teams have begun their seasons already.

The Chelsea Girls Basketall team had a great year last year, going 17-5 (13-1), taking first in the SEC White and reaching the district finals.

This year, the team has their eyes set higher, choosing the team motto “Make History” The Bulldog are in a good position to do so, losing only two seniors and returning ten players from last years team.

Key players will be senior forward Maddie Vasquez, who averaged 9 points to lead the team. Senior Abby Fullerton, the second leading scorer on the team will be another key on offense.

“There are all kinds of opportunities,” said 18-year head coach Todd Blomquist on the season. “The challenge will be for this group to play one step at a time and not look ahead. To make sure that we learn from our mistakes, and don’t think we’re better than who we are. That will be the challenge. This team can do a lot of different things, we’ll see if we can put it all together. The sky is the limit and they work hard everyday.”

This year, the team held an annual “Hell week” of workouts something Blomquist told The Sun Times has been going on for many years. This year, with the girls, season starting one week later than the boys, the week had full participation.

“A lot of kids in the program are multisport,” said Blomquist. “If they are in a state tournament or cross country meet, a lot of times there was overlap and they might miss some of it. We had everyone this year. It galvanizes the kids, doing something hard together.”

The Bulldogs opened their season on Dec. 4
