Season Preview: Saline Girls Basketball

Disclaimer* –  Due to a miscommunication, previews will be coming out over the next day or two. We are aware some teams have begun their seasons already.

The Saline Hornet Girls Basketball team is looking to build on a good first year with head coach Leigh Ann Roehm.

The Hornets finished 11-11 (6-4) and took second in the SEC Red.

This season, the Hornets will have to replace senior Asia Lindsey, last year’s point guard, and Brooke Bauer, an honorable mention all-conference center.

Luckily, the Hornets return their two leading scorers in sophomore Ella Stemmer (13 ppg., 8 reb., 2 asst., 2 stl.) and Nicole Sweetland (7 ppg., 5 reb., 2.5 stl.)

Stemmer will play the 1-5 for the Hornets, last year she was honorable mention All-State as a freshman for class A and was first team all-conference.

She’s the key,” said Roehm. “Things run through her and her leadership, commitment and work ethic are phenomenal.”

“I think that one key thing is we lost two key seniors, but we return 9 players from last year’s team,” said Roehm on her thoughts on the upcoming season. “With me coming in new last year, we’ve got a year to build on. I feel our experience and comfort within the system is so much better and my team put in so much work and commitment over the summer its phenomenal. I can’t give them enough credit for the amount of work and preparation they’ve done leading into this season. I absolutely love my team, I am so excited for this year. We have our two leading scorers back but then were deep. A lot of different players will contribute a ton. Our depth, work ethic, add commitment during the season will be key about us.”

This offseason, Roehm told The Sun Times that the number one thing they worked on was team and culture building.

The Hornets began their season on Dec. 4.
