The Chelsea hockey team opened its season by hosting the Chelsea Invitational Thanksgiving weekend and dropped a pair of games to open the 2018-19 campaign.
The Bulldogs were short a handful of players that were still playing for the football team in the state championship game leaving them low on their numbers for the tournament.
Chelsea opened by falling to Okemos 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon.
The Chiefs scored single goals in the first and second periods to take a 2-0 lead after two before the Bulldogs would rally.
Pedro Lopes cut the Okemos lead to 2-1 with a goal at the 10-minute mark of the third period.
It stayed that way until the final minutes when Tyler Emmert found the net with 46 seconds left to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.
The Bulldogs were called for a penalty in the overtime period and Okemos capitalized, scoring on the power play to win the game 3-2.
Aiden Boote was stellar in net for the Bulldogs, stopping 47 of 50 shots on goal.
Lopes added an assist to go with his goal. Brady Fleszar and Wes Hansen added assists.
The Bulldogs then fell to Allen Park Cabrini 6-2 in the consolation match Saturday.
Cabrini struck first, but Hansen tied the game at 1-1 after one period.
Allen Park made it 2-1 early in the second, but again the Bulldogs answered when Gabe Vowels scored on the power-play with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second.
Cabrini exploded for three goals in under a minute late in the second to blow the game open and take a 5-2 lead after two periods and cruised in the third period to the win.
Brad Sullivan recorded two assists for Chelsea, while Lopes and Emmert each had one.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they face Pinckney in an “away game” at Arctic Ice Arena at 2:30 PM.
