The Chelsea softball bats came through when they needed them most as the Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the SEC White title with a 7-4 win over SEC Red champion Monroe Friday.

The Bulldogs improved to 18-2 in the White, with Tecumseh sitting at 17-2 with a game still to be played against Ann Arbor Skyline Wednesday.

The game with Monroe was scoreless heading in to the third when Kiersten Anstead went deep to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Monroe answered with a run in the bottom of the third to tie it at one.

The Bulldogs put their first four batters on in the fourth and an RBI single by Anstead made it 2-1. Sydnee Liedel made it 3-1 with an RBI single, but Monroe got out of the jam with a popout and groundout to end the inning.


Maddy Scheese drove in a pair of runs in the fifth with a two-run single to make it 5-1, but Monroe would rally. The Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4.

Allison Hale opened the sixth with a single and came home on an RBI double by Maddie Vasquez and Scheese came through with a big two out run-scoring single to make it 7-4.

Monroe put a pair of runners on with one out in the seventh, but Maddie Kemp got a strike out and a ground out to end the game and give the Bulldogs the title.

Scheese finished with three hits and three RBI to lead the offense. Anstead added two hits and two RBI, while Liedel had two hits and an RBI. Peighton Root and Kemp had two hit each, while Vasquez, Stephanie Dark, and Hayley Townsend each had one hit. Kemp struck out 10 for the win for Chelsea.

The Bulldogs will take on Howell Wednesday and open district play against Adrian Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 AM at Parma Western.
