After 33 years, Jon Oesterle is calling it a day.
Oesterle, owner of the popular Westside Gym in downtown Chelsea posted a sign last week on its front door notifying residents and members that he is closing the doors for good.
“Thank you for 33 great years Westside Gym Members! The gym is now closed.” Reads part of the statement on the front door. Westside Gym has been in Chelsea since 1985, with reviews on their Facebook page backing up its 4.9 out of 5 score.
“One of my all-time favorite gyms! Old school, hardcore and friendly. Some great pieces of equipment,” said Terry Clees in a review posted in Aug. 2017
“Old school gym where everybody knows your name.” said Michael King in another review posted in Sept. 2017.
So, what was the deciding factor in Westside Gym closing?
“Well 33 years – I’m almost 60 years old and I decided I didn’t want to do it anymore,” said Oesterle with a laugh in a phone interview with The Sun Times. “That’s really what it comes down to I guess. It got to a point where I could not do that and do something else and I guess that’s it.”
Oesterle preferred to keep his retirement plans to himself, telling The Sun Times, he had “plans and ideas.”
