Mary Love Hunter

Mary Love Hunter passed away peacefully December 3, 2022 surrounded by family. She was born in Montreal Quebec, Canada on July 30, 1938 to Eleanor Griffeth Love and Fred Wooster Love. Her parents later moved to Youngstown, Ohio where she grew up and attended school. Mary attended the University of Michigan where she received her bachelor and master’s degrees in Nursing. She married Daniel Hunter, her dear husband of 63 years, on June 13, 1959. Her professional nursing career spanned 52 years as a nurse at the University of Michigan Medical Center where she was nurse manager of the Urology/Otolaryngology unit from 1985 to 1992 and was an assistant professor at the School of Nursing from 1978 to 2000. She and Dan owned and operated Community Pharmacy in Ann Arbor from 1978 until Dan’s retirement in 1998. Toward the end of Mary’s career, she spent eight years as a practicing nurse at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. She also co-authored two textbooks on nursing, Introduction to Nursing and Introduction to Person-Centered Nursing. She was a member of The Alva Gordon Sink Alumnae Group and Chapter W. of the PEO Sisterhood.

Mary and Dan were active members of the Ann Arbor community for nearly 70 years and loved calling Ann Arbor their home. They loved to travel and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. They were longtime members of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor. Mary and Dan were avid skiers into their 70s and were pleased to introduce their children and grandchildren to skiing. She and her husband also have enjoyed many summers with family at their cottage on Sand Lake in Irish Hills, Michigan. Whether at their cottage or Ann Arbor home, Mary and Dan often hosted parties. Chatter and laughter would resonate from the house for holidays and family gatherings. Mary was also an avid reader. Reading everything from Jane Austen to mysteries of all genres to academic literature. She was also an enthusiastic Wolverine fan.

Mary was a loving and deeply caring wife, daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother and is sorely missed by all. She is survived by her husband, her son Anthony (Catherine) of Rives Junction, Michigan, her daughter Susan (Michael) Kizer of Chelsea, Michigan and son Andrew (Marilyn) of Los Angeles, California. She is survived by grandchildren Lucas (Emily) Kizer, Paul Kizer, Noah (Mikhaila) Kizer, Nellie Hunter, Benjamin Hunter, Nicholas Hunter; great-grandchildren Adilyn Kizer and Rowan Kizer; sister Fran (Marty) Rome; brother-in-law Richard Darland and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Jean Darland and her grandson, Jackson Graham Hunter.

The family would like to thank the incredible staff of Towsley Village Memory Care Center and Arbor Hospice. They both went above and beyond to care for Mary.

A memorial gathering of family and friends for Mary will be held Friday, December 30, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S 4th Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104. A memorial service will occur Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St Andrew's Episcopal Church, 306 N Division Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104. A time of fellowship and luncheon will immediately follow.
