“Champion Your Health:” Blood Pressure Checks and Stroke Awareness at Chelsea Senior Center

|

In recognition of Older Americans Month, National Stroke Awareness Month, and National Blood Pressure Month, the Chelsea Senior Center is offering free blood pressure screenings throughout May as part of a broader focus on healthy aging and stroke prevention.

Older Americans Month, established in 1963, recognizes the contributions of older adults and promotes awareness of issues affecting aging populations. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” highlights prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility in maintaining independence and quality of life.

Chelsea Senior Center is placing this message front and center. Executive Director Jennifer Smith said, “Taking charge of your health means making everyday decisions that nurture both your physical and mental well-being. Simple, consistent habits, like keeping up with preventive care and staying socially engaged, can go a long way in helping individuals preserve their health and independence over time.”

The center will offer blood pressure checks in the lobby on May 13 from 12:30–1:30 p.m., May 15 from 10:45–11:45 a.m., and May 21 from 10:45–11:45 a.m. The screenings are provided by volunteers Angie Adiska, Janice Kidd, and Jean Vargas.

High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke, making regular monitoring an important preventive measure.

“Many strokes are preventable, and one of my goals in the community is to help people understand that knowing your numbers and making healthy choices are some of the most powerful tools we have to prevent stroke,” said Angie Adiska, RN with Trinity Health. “Recognizing stroke signs and acting fast can save lives.”

Adiska also encourages people to remember the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T. to identify stroke warning signs: Balance loss, Eye or vision changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 911.

According to the National Stroke Association, someone in the United States experiences a stroke every 40 seconds. Treatments such as clot-busting medications administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset can significantly improve recovery outcomes.

The Chelsea Senior Center encourages community members to take advantage of available screenings and educational resources throughout the month.
