Saline City Council passed a two-year contract renewal with Chief of Police Marlene Radzik at the May 4 meeting. Brought into the position in 2022, Radzik has renewed her contract through the city each year, and the consistency of her position led to City Manager Dan Swallow recommending the contract.
“I think her performance has been excellent,” Swallow said. “Definitely in terms of community involvement. She’s been out in the community whenever there’s been, for example, a protest downtown. She’s been present whenever there are any issues or incidents that come up.”
The recommended change to a two-year contract from previous one-year contracts would aim to provide stability for the department according to Swallow.
“She’s made some positive cultural changes in the police department,” he said. “So, in that discussion, I’m recommending that we consider a two-year employment agreement.”
Councilmember Janet Dillon recommended a minor change to the contract’s language, which would ensure that the agreement would expire rather than renew if negotiations failed 90 days after expiration.
“This was something that we’ve talked about before, and we’ve taken out of other contracts, just because it does take away some of the urgency in coming up to a compromise and a negotiation,” Dillon said.
The amended contract was passed unanimously.
