Saline City Council passed a collection of resolutions for the month of May during the May 4 meeting. While a resolution does not require any formal action after recognition, passing a resolution can seek to raise awareness in the community.
National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week seeks to recognize the work done by nurses across the country in “an ever evolving health care system while continuing to provide safe, dependable, conscientious care,” according to the May 4 memorandum submitted to Council.
“The nursing profession is one in which the mind, the hand and the heart are devoted to the mental, physical, and social improvement of all, and it is a profession devoted to tender care, restoration of health, and alleviation of suffering,” it reads.
National Nurses week was observed May 6-12
National Police Week
May 15 is nationally designated as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and the week it falls in as National Police Week.
According to Saline’s resolution, “it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of their law enforcement agency, and that members of our law enforcement agency recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression.”
National Police Week this year will occur during May 10-16.
National Public Works Week
“Each year, City Council recognizes National Public Works Week, sponsored by the American Public Works Association, to honor the essential services that support the community’s health, safety, and quality of life,” the May 4 memorandum reads. “This resolution acknowledges the dedicated professionals who maintain infrastructure, manage public resources, and deliver critical services, while highlighting the importance of public works in building and sustaining a strong, resilient community.”
Public works include infrastructure, city maintenance and services, as well as water supply work and waste systems management.
National Public Works Week will occur May 17-23.
National Kids to Parks Day
2026 will mark the 15th National Kids to Parks Day, organized by the National Park Trust. The day encourages parents and guardians to bring children to parks to foster active play in kids’ lives. According to the resolution submitted to Council, “it is important to introduce a new generation to our nation’s parks because of the decline in Park attendance over the last decade.”
National Kids to Parks Day is May 19.
Historic Preservation Month
Three resolutions encompassing the full month were also passed, including the marking of May as Historic Preservation Month.
“This resolution highlights how preservation strengthens community identity, supports economic development, and connects residents to the state’s rich history—from landmarks across Michigan to nationally recognized programs led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation,” a memorandum from the May 4 meeting reads.
National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
The month of May was also recognized as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by the Saline City Council.
“May is a great time to spread the word to local communities about the benefits of getting active,” the resolution reads.
National Bike Month
The final resolution marked May as National Bike Month. National Bike Month has been observed since 1956.
“This resolution encourages residents to explore their community by bike, supports efforts to improve cycling infrastructure and safety, and highlights the role of bicycling in enhancing public health, reducing environmental impact, and strengthening community connectivity,” according to the memorandum submitted at the May 4 meeting.
All resolutions were passed unanimously.
