Scio Twp wants to Talk with the City of Dexter

Scio Township wants to talk with the city of Dexter about the annexation proposal of the Sloan-Kingsley Property.

To do so, the township has put together a group of representatives to sit down with Dexter to talk about the 45 acres of land located in the township, but whose owners hope to develop it with a connection to the city.

The Scio Township Board designated their group at the April 28 township board meeting. The group is made up Township Attorney Mariah Fink, Clerk Jessica Flintoft, Trustee Kathleen Knol, Trustee David Read, and Land Preservation Commission Co-Chairperson Elizabeth Wiseman. They will speak with the city of Dexter about the approximately 45 acres of Scio Township that is known as “Sloan-Kingsley” Property.

The land in question is near the Dexter Crossing neighborhood, which is located within the city’s boundaries.

The Sloan-Kingsley proposal involves a developer wanting to develop the 45 acres of the land into a residential development with the idea to annex into Dexter to help it connect into its municipal services, which the township cannot provide at that location.

In her report to the township board, Scio’s Operations Manager Kristy Aiken gave some background for the decision on designating a group to represent the township.

Aiken said on November 14, 2023, the Scio Township Board of Trustees adopted a resolution to express the township’s position on the application for annexation by the city of Dexter of the 45 acres known as the Sloan Kingsley property.

That resolution said in part the “Scio Township Board agrees that the proposed annexation request does not promote or meet Township goals of open space preservation or pathway.”

Fast forward a few years, Aiken then said on March 23, 2026, “The Dexter City Council passed a resolution to request that the Scio Township Board of Trustees concur with the City of Dexter’s support to annex these 45 acres of Scio Township into the City of Dexter. On that date, the Dexter City Council also approved a preliminary development agreement with Baker Road Land Holdings LLC, including the provision of a new community well on this Scio Township land to meet the City’s future demand for public water.”

So now both parties will sit down and talk annexation. Stay tuned.
