Voter Alert for Webster Township

The vote in the August 6 Primary is looking like an important one for Webster Township voters.

Not only is their competition for who will serve on the board of trustees and as supervisor, but there also two millage proposals for voters to answer.

The primary will see voters pick the Democratic and Republican candidates for the election in November. In Webster, each seat is up for election.

For the board of trustees, voters are being asked to vote for not more than four candidates.

The Democratic candidates are Shelly Vrsek, Tarek Z. Kanaan, Brant Savander, Jeff Harms and Dan Munzel while the Republican candidates are David D. Daily, Inshal Chenet, John M. Gills, John H. Westman and Richard Kleinschmidt.

For the township supervisor, voters are being asked to vote for not more than one.

The Democratic candidates are Peter T. Stevens and L. Michael DeAngelo and the Republican candidate is John V. Kingsley.

The two proposals before voters involve roads and land preservation.

Proposal A is asking voters to authorize the levying of 0.8225 mills to provide funding to maintain, reconstruct, resurface or preserve roads in the township.

The ballot will read:

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be imposed each year for all purposes on real and tangible personal property in Webster Township, Michigan be increased as provided in Section 6, Article IX of the Michigan Constitution be authorized to levy a tax not to exceed 0.8225 mill ($0.8225 per $1,000 of state taxable valuation) for a period of ten (10) years, beginning with the December 1, 2024 tax levy (which will generate estimated revenues of $470,150.51 in the first year), for road improvements and maintenance of roads in Webster Township?

Proposal B is the renewal of Farmland and Open Space Preservation Millage.

The ballot for this will read:

Shall the previous voted increase in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Webster Township of 0.5 mills ($0.50 per $1,000 of taxable value), reduced to 0.4735 mills ($0.47 per $1,000 of taxable value) by the required millage rollbacks, be renewed at ($0.4735 per $1,000 of taxable value) and levied for ten (10) years, 2025 through 2034 inclusive, for the purpose of farmland and open space preservation within Webster Township, raising an estimated $270,388.00 in 2025 for the first year of levy?

Early voting for Webster Township voters for the August 6, 2024 State Primary Election will take place from July 27-August 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations:
Scio Township Hall at 827 N. Zeeb Road.
Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center at 4135 Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor.

The polls are open for the Aug. 6 Primary from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Webster Township Hall.

The last day to register by mail or online and be eligible to vote in the August 6 election is July 22, 2024. After this date, anyone who qualifies as an elector may register to vote in person with proof of residency at Webster Township Hall, 5665 Webster Church Rd.
