Residents navigating the summer-long roundabout construction on Dexter’s west side may also be wondering what’s happening along the rest of Main Street.
In addition to the ongoing roundabout construction at Island Lake Road (Main Street) and Dexter-Chelsea Road, the city is preparing for resurfacing work and pedestrian crossing upgrades along portions of downtown Main Street, according to a May 4 proposal submitted to the city by OHM Advisors.
According to OHM, the project was bid May 1 and is expected to be awarded to Cadillac Asphalt of Wixom for approximately $674,154.
The work includes resurfacing about 0.22 miles of Main Street between Jeffords Street, and Baker Road.
The project also calls for pedestrian accessibility improvements at the intersections of Broad Street and Main Street and Alpine Street and Main Street. OHM said the work will include installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons, designed to improve pedestrian visibility at crossings.
Additional improvements are planned at seven existing midblock crossings throughout the city, where equipment and lighting upgrades are expected.
The proposal also references curb, sidewalk and ramp repairs, along with pavement markings and permanent signage restoration.
OHM’s letter notes that construction is expected to be “substantially complete and open to traffic” by Aug. 5, though some project administration work will continue afterward to satisfy Michigan Department of Transportation requirements.
The timing means Dexter motorists will likely encounter multiple traffic impacts this summer as work continues simultaneously on both the downtown resurfacing effort and the highly visible roundabout construction.
The construction schedule requires the project to be substantially complete and open to traffic no later than August 5th, 2026.
