James Garland Love

James G. “Jim” Love, born November 3, 1933 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away at age 92. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jim shared 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia J. (Kelly) Love. Together, they raised their family in Dexter and later lived nearly three decades on Baseline Lake in Pinckney, where boating, fishing, and family gatherings created treasured memories. He especially loved supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their many activities.
Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, James M. and Kamela; his grandchildren,
James M. M., Richard W. M. (Elise), Briana Krull, and Eden Krull; and his Love great-grandchildren, Miller, Taylor, William, Wyatt, and Cora. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn (Tempest), his father, William, his brother, William, his daughter, Kelly Love, and his daughter-in-law, Sandia (Maynard) Love.
A lifelong athlete, Jim was the 1951 State Champion in the low hurdles at Ann Arbor High School and a 1955 Big Ten champion hurdler at the University of Michigan. He proudly served as pilot in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959 before flying for American Airlines. Jim spent the majority of his career as a teacher, guidance counselor, and coach in Ann Arbor Public Schools. He particularly enjoyed being head track coach at Ann Arbor High School. After retirement from education in 1991, to stay active, Jim worked as Marketing Manager for Coach’s Catastrophe Cleaning, using his extraordinary people skills. Jim had a special devotion to University of Michigan athletics especially football and track and field. He took great joy in officiating track meets for decades including U of M, NCAA nationals and many invitationals.
In retirement, Jim enjoyed woodworking, membership in the Chelsea Kiwanis Club, and breakfasts with co-worker friends from Ann Arbor Public Schools. Beloved by all who knew him, he was known for his positivity, humor, and love of animals. Jim leaves a lasting legacy of family, mentorship, and joy.
