Lima Township held a special meeting on June 1 with one of the agenda items being a discussion of future plans of Consumers Energy with a representative from Consumers. The specific discussion was whether or not the Jackson-based energy company will build a natural gas-burning 1.4-gigawatt plant on land in the township.
The meeting in township hall ended up being a full house with residents asking questions and raising their concerns as two representatives from Consumers emphasized the option in Lima is only that and is too early in the process as the energy company explores its plans for future needs.
This became an issue after it was recently learned by residents and township officials that Consumers Energy has an option to purchase 120 acres of land off of S. Lima Center Road.
Residents expressed concerns ranged from whether or not the possible power plant would be connected with the Data Center in Saline Township to the impact it could have on them and their neighbors, from their own health, environment, water and property values. Many wondered why Lima is even being looked at when they are not customers of the company.
In addressing some of the concerns and questions, the respresentatives from Consumers said they are not connected to the data center and the specific reason as to why Lima is an option is because of its location and what’s there already. They said a location with electric power and gas lines with land that is available is what makes an option a possibility.
As for addressing other concerns, the representatives said it’s only an option and too early in the process with nothing even planned yet. They did say however when they do build facilities they stick to the governmental regulations and standards set forth.
The Sun Times News followed up with Consumers Energy.
Here is what Consumers spokesman Matt Johnson said in a statement on the company’s behalf:
“We announced in March that our next Integrated Resource Plan will add natural gas plants at the Karn Generating Facility in Bay County and Thetford Township in Genesee County. That will continue to be part of the plan that we file later this year. We’re continuing to evaluate other options to meet future energy needs that are consistent with our planning process and long-term goals. At this time, our plans do not include a plant sited in Lima Township, but will continue to communicate with the public if anything changes. Any future plans that include a plant sited in Lima Township will require a lengthy approval process with local and state agencies. As with any 20-year strategy, maintaining options is crucial, and it allows us to be flexible as conditions, policy and needs change. We’ve been in contact with the Lima Township supervisor previously and want to be sure we’re open and transparent with the community. We will follow up with more information to ensure we’re meeting their need for good communication.”
At the conclusion of the township’s special meeting it was safe to say the majority of the Lima residents in township hall that evening are concerned and do not want something like that in their community.
Going forward, Consumers does have a three year option to buy that land which runs through early 2028. There’s also an option for a two-year extension on this.
