Saline Girls’ Lacrosse Tops Skyline in SEC Battle

The Saline girls’ lacrosse team moved into first place in the SEC after taking down Ann Arbor Skyline in a battle of SEC co-leaders Wednesday night.

The win over Skyline improved the Hornets record to 4-0 in the SEC and dropped Skyline to 3-1.

Saline has games with Huron and Bedford remaining next week for a shot at the SEC title.

The Hornets have battled from behind in several games to win this season, but Saline struck early against the Eagles.

Carly Pufpaf put the Hornets on the board just under two minutes into the game.

Maddie Nishioka would find the net twice to give Saline a 3-2 lead after one period.

The Eagles answered again to start the second, but the Hornets went back on top with Pufpaf’s second of the night for a 4-3 lead and Ayla Stage scored with just 19 seconds left in the half to make it 5-3 at the break.

Skyline opened the second with a goal, but Nora Stevenson answered to put Saline up 6-4.

Kieri Diehlman made the save of the game when she stopped a penalty shot to keep it 6-4 and moments later Lucy Sweeny put one past the Skyline goaltender to extend the lead to 7-4.

Pufpaf followed with her third of the game for the hat trick to push the led to 8-4 after three periods.

Skyline would get back into the game with a pair of goals to cut the Saline lead to 8-6, but the Hornets held them off for the win.

The Hornets rolled of Tecumseh 21-3 earlier in the week. Stats were not available.

Saline improved to 6-4 overall on the season.
