National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, honoring the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of law enforcement officers who serve in the line of duty. This year National Police Week was May 10–16, culminating on May 15 with the Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day is set aside each year to honor officers, deputies, and correctional officers who have paid the ultimate price by losing their lives in the line of duty.
Each year, the Washtenaw 100 initiative and the Washtenaw County Criminal Justice Association select a police agency to sponsor the Peace Officers Memorial Day event. Held at the Washtenaw 100 Club Memorial Park in Ypsilanti, the Saline Police Department was chosen this year and sponsored in conjunction with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.
Paying tribute to the 13 fallen officers in Washtenaw County were local leaders, chiefs, and sheriffs in their Class A uniforms, along with a bagpiper and the Washtenaw County Honor Guard composed of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and Ann Arbor Police Department.
