The Sun Times News has released a new video featuring author and investigator Ray Szymanski in conversation with interviewer Steve Gwisdalla, examining one of Michigan’s most enduring mysteries—the 1966 Dexter and Hillsdale UFO sightings.
In March 1966, hundreds of residents near Dexter and Hillsdale reported seeing glowing objects moving across the night sky, only to have the sightings famously dismissed by the U.S. Air Force as “swamp gas.” In the STN interview, Szymanski looks beyond the headlines to examine the lasting impact the controversy had on witnesses and the decades-long effort to document their accounts and preserve their stories.
One of the interview’s most poignant moments comes from eyewitness Frank Manor, who reflects on the personal cost of speaking publicly about what he witnessed. Asked whether he regretted telling people what he saw, Manor answered, “Yes, I am… not because it wasn’t the truth, but because of the reaction of the people. They think you’re a nut.”
Szymanski, who has spent years researching the case, explains that his role has been to preserve and document the stories of witnesses with fairness and respect. He argues that the larger story is not simply what happened in the skies over Michigan, but how those witnesses were treated afterward and why their experiences deserve to be taken seriously.
Szymanski notes that public awareness and official acknowledgment of unexplained sightings have changed significantly in recent years, raising new questions about how society should approach the subject going forward.
