Editor’s note: In its May 15, 2024, edition, the Sun Times News included a special “Discover Tecumseh” section. It contains articles describing many of the businesses and community life in this charming town. We’re running the articles online and encourage you to add a trip to Tecumseh to your list of fun things to do this summer.
The Matthews House, a charming home decor store downtown, is a dream turned reality for sisters Ela Dineen and Silvia Frey. The store, which began as a family nickname for Ela’s home, has blossomed into a local hub for creative and personal interior design. With a diverse range of products, including unique textiles, furnishings, and custom-made furniture, the store emphasizes quality and individuality.
Ela, the creative force behind the establishment, draws inspiration from her personal interests in pottery, gardening, and beekeeping. “First and foremost, it is a home decor and furnishings store,” Ela explains. Her passion is evident as she talks about the joy of creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for their customers. “We care a lot about how our homes feel,” she says, highlighting the importance of a cozy, personalized living space.
The store is not just a place to buy decor but also a platform for local artisans to showcase their work. “It provides a place for local makers to sell their goods,” Ela notes, pointing out the success of this collaborative approach. Custom furniture pieces are a particular highlight, tailored to meet the specific needs of their clientele. Ela describes their flexibility in catering to customer requests, whether it’s a change in color or material, emphasizing their dedication to customer satisfaction.
The Matthews House also offers interior design services, transforming entire rooms. The sisters have used their creative capabilities and enthusiasm to design or redesign rooms already furnished or from scratch.
