Not every hot-weather outing needs to become an all-day production. For Milan families looking for a quick place to cool off, Wilson Park offers free water play without leaving town.
The elephant-themed splash pad sits beside the playground and near a shaded pavilion, allowing families to combine a few runs through the water with lunch, playground time or a break in the shade. Children can turn interactive features, duck beneath a dome of water and play around the large elephant sprayer at the center.
Several other options around Washtenaw County offer everything from free, low-key water play to a full day at a water park.
Wilson Park Splash Pad
Free | 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily | 89 Wabash St., Milan
The splash pad is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Picnic tables, a pavilion, a playground and portable restrooms are nearby.
One important detail can save families from thinking the splash pad is closed: The water does not run continuously. Visitors must press the activation button to start the spray features.
Children 13 and younger must have adult supervision, and the city recommends water shoes. The splash pad may close temporarily for maintenance or during some park events.
Best for: A free, easy outing close to home.

Bicentennial Park Splash Pad
Free | Open during park hours | 2901 E. Ellsworth Road, Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor’s first splash pad offers ground sprays, misting arches, water curtains and other interactive features on a level, barrier-free surface.
The park also has a nearby playground and renovated restrooms, making it a practical choice for families with children who may not all want to stay in the water.
The splash pad is not staffed, and children must be supervised.
Best for: Free water play with accessible features and a playground nearby.
Blue Heron Bay Spray Park
Paid admission | Independence Lake County Park
Blue Heron Bay is a dedicated spray park inside Independence Lake County Park and may be one of the more convenient paid options for families traveling from Dexter or Chelsea.
Admission prices and operating hours vary during the season, so families should check the county’s website before making the drive.
Best for: A larger spray park experience on the western side of the county.
Rolling Hills Water Park
Paid admission | 7660 Stony Creek Road, Ypsilanti Township
Rolling Hills is the full-day option. The county water park includes a wave pool, lazy river, slides and a water play area for younger children.
Hours, ticket availability and admission costs vary, so families should check the daily schedule before leaving home.
Best for: Families ready to spend several hours in the water.
Nature Playscape Waterplay
Free | 1831 Traver Road, Ann Arbor
The Nature Playscape at Leslie Science & Nature Center offers a different kind of water play. Instead of running through sprayers, children use pumps to create streams, dams and waterfalls that flow toward a rain garden.
The experience is more hands-on and may be muddier than a traditional splash pad. Towels and a change of clothes are worth bringing.
Best for: Children who enjoy building, experimenting and getting messy.
Weather, maintenance and special events can affect outdoor water features. Families should check each location’s website before heading out and bring towels, sunscreen and dry clothes.
