The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) announced it will close its recycling drop-off bin location at 1187 Old Manchester Road in Chelsea, effective May 22, 2026.

Officials said the closure is tied to future community development plans and rising operational costs at the site. After the shutdown, six community recycling drop-off locations will remain available throughout the WWRA service area.

The agency emphasized that illegal dumping is prohibited at all recycling centers. Illegal dumping includes leaving non-recyclable items in or around bins. Common examples include furniture, construction debris, “tanglers” such as cords or hoses, foam materials, plastic bags, and bagged recyclables.

WWRA noted that some items are left in hopes others will take them, or to avoid proper disposal. However, placing non-recyclable materials at drop-off sites is illegal and may result in fines of up to $1,000. Residents are encouraged to properly dispose of or donate unwanted items.
