CITY OF MILAN
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
PROPOSED DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Milan will hold a public hearing on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. The hearing will take place at Milan City Hall in the Council Chambers, located at 147 Wabash Street, Milan, MI 48160.
PURPOSE OF THE HEARING:
The purpose of this public hearing is to receive citizen comment regarding the establishment of a newly proposed Milan Main Street Local Historic District. This proposal has been prepared and presented by the Milan Historic District Study Committee in accordance with Michigan’s Local Historic Districts Act, Public Act 169 of 1970.
DISTRICT BOUNDARIES & SCOPE:
The proposed district encompasses properties of historic, cultural, or architectural significance within the downtown commercial core, consistent with the federal Milan Main Street Historic District established in 1999 and added to the National Register of Historic Places. It encompasses 40 mostly commercial properties along Main Street from the Old Fire Barn on the East to the Storl Apartments on the west. If approved, the local historic district designation will establish design review guidelines and require approval from a Historic District Commission for exterior architectural changes visible from any public right-of-way within the boundary.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION:
A map and a complete listing of the properties included within the proposed district boundaries will be available for public review at the meeting or in advance at the City Clerk’s Office during normal business hours.
All interested parties, residents, and property owners are encouraged to attend this hearing to ask questions and voice their support or objections.
Written comments will also be accepted before the close of the public hearing and should be addressed to:
