The Dexter City Council voted June 22 to move forward with installing a wooden accessibility ramp at the Monument Park gazebo, selecting a proposal from KAB Enterprises, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $50,915.65.
The project is expected to be completed in November, after the park’s busy season of community events.
The council had previously explored the possibility of installing a mechanical lift instead of a ramp. However, several members concluded that the ramp better fits the park’s aesthetics while avoiding future maintenance costs.
Mayor Shawn Keough noted that the city had already received an engineering estimate for a lift that was comparable to the ramp project.
Councilmember Pavlo Papov initially moved to seek competitive bids for the lift before making a final decision, arguing the council should compare actual construction prices for both options. Other council members questioned whether spending additional money to prepare lift bid documents was worthwhile. Papov withdrew his motion with the council showing favor towards a ramp.
Council members also discussed whether wood or steel railings would provide the best appearance and lowest maintenance, but agreed staff should first clarify how the bid alternates are priced.
